🤔
effective changemaking snowball analogy
when trying to enact change in a community (or any complex system)
often one thinks to "identify the end goal, make a plan on how to get there, step by step" (A to Z) (current-state to ideal-state)
an alternative way to think is:
identify the ideal-state
understand the current-state as much as possible
identify the highest-leverage short-term activity (effort:result) that nudges in the direction of the ideal state
ex. leverage those who are most likely to "buy what you're selling"
it's often ineffective (or very hard) to force a change onto a system that does not "want it"
"pick your battles"
reanalyze, repeat
snowball analogy
say you want to build a giant snowball and get it to certain place
at some point, it grows large enough that you can't just force it to roll exactly in the direction you want
you have to feel for which directions it's willing to go, and "settle" for the one that gets you closest to where you want to be
