people want to change, but don't, because of internal competing desires / fears (usually unconscious)
often avoid making a change to avoid the potential negative consequences
in particular, negative emotions (fear / anxiety / ...)
is it "resistance to change, in general" or is it "resistance to specific changes, because of conflicting desires (including fears)"
(it's the latter)
~ seems similar to CBT / ACT
Imagine asking your trusted friends / family / coworkers:
βGiven you know me well, can you identify one or two areas for improvement that you think would help me be a more effective individual?"
~ start / stop / continue
steps:
commit to a change goal
describe the behavior you need to change
identify specific actions or behaviours that you are doing (or not doing) as examples of things to change
uncover your hidden competing commitments (desires)
consider what would happen if you did the opposite of the actions identified in the previous step - what fears / worries / emotions does this bring up?
what desires do these fears / worries / emotions reveal?
tease out your big assumptions (beliefs / models)
identify the underlying assumptions for each of the fears / commitments in the previous step (ie. thoughts that seem to validate the fears)
