posts on social media frequently bemoan "we own nothing in the digital age"
ie. a trend towards renting/leasing vs owning
ex. music (spotify), tv and movies (netflix)
BUT, this in many ways is a good thing, and it'd be better for physical industries to follow
why good? b/c it aligns incentives, in particular countering "planned obsolescence"
providers of, say, washing machines, would be incentivized to built a long lasting machine (and with strong competition in leasing, there would be downward pressure on price)
but, b/c customers are happy with buying, and there is more profit in selling (and re-selling), and little competition in leasing... this doesn't happen much
it happens more in digital industries, b/c it's much easier to achieve scale
