Our kitchen lacks pantry space, and our kitchen island had space for bar stools we were never gonna buy, so I made some custom shelves instead:
I bought 3 planks at Home Depot, cut them with a jigsaw in a friend's backyard, then drilled the holes and meticulously sandpapered the joining edges inside our apartment (covering everything in dust). The supports are PVC pipes and joint-thingies spray-painted black. The wood staining was done on our balcony.
All in all, a huge hack job; I miss high school, where I had unlimited access to a wood shop.
It's a bit wobbly - it should have some diagonal supports, or better fastening between the supports and the planks - but it works!
Easter egg: the underside of the boards was never painted, but you can only tell when you lie down on the floor.
