- shape our perception of self
- ego protects, tries to maintain consistency
- ...but they aren't true
  - they are limited (a simplification of the truth, redacted, biased)
  - ...and limiting (limit you "stay within your narrative")
- ...but can be harnessed
  - re: how other's perceive you
    - a lot of existing "control your narrative" / "personal branding" type advice
  - re: how you perceive yourself
    - "the secret" (visualize your future), editing your personal narrative to your own ends
shared narratives
- stories people tell each other and believe about the world
- ex. that countries exist, laws exist, corporations exist, gods exist, society exists
- all fictions (vs, say, material reality)
  - an alien would not see "Canada", except in some patterns of behaviour in people
